About Dr Viven Rajah
ENT Doctor
Dr.Viven Rajah was awarded his medical degree (MBChB) by the University of Natal in 1982.
Following basic training in a variety of surgical specialities including plastic surgery, he completed his advanced training, and qualified as a specialist Ear, Nose and Throat, Head & Neck Surgeon in 1990(MMED (Otol) (Natal).
He was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (FRCSEd) in 1992.
Dr Rajah was a consultant surgeon at King Edward VIII hospital and Addington hospital from 1990, and went into private practice in Durban from 1993-1999.
He spent 8 years (1999-2007) as an ENT, Head and Neck specialist consultant in Auckland, New Zealand. During this period, he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), and upgraded his surgical skills, doing a Fellowship in Head and Neck cancer surgery, and spending a sabbatical in Adelaide on advanced endoscopic sinus surgery.
Upon returning to Durban in 2007, he went into private practice at St Augustine’s Hospital.
He is a visiting consultant at the Department of Otolaryngology, Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.
Dr. Rajah is currently registered as an Otorhinolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa, and with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
He deals with the full range or ear, nose and throat complaints in children and in adults (e.g. ear infections, hearing loss, nasal obstruction, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea), as well as with cancers of the oral cavity, throat, and voice box (larynx). Dr. Rajah follows best ENT practice guidelines in consultation with his patients.
Special interest and training in-
1] Head and neck surgery- surgery for benign and malignant tumours of the oral cavity, oropharynx (throat), tongue, larynx (voice box), paranasal sinuses.
2] Advanced endoscopic sinus surgery- revision surgery, frontal recess surgery, and sphenoid sinus surgery
3] Endoscopic skull base surgery- these operations are performed as combined procedures with neurosurgeons, and included the treatment of tumours, (e.g. pituitary tumours, skull base meningiomas), CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) leaks, and meningocoeles and encephaloceoles of the anterior skull base.
4] Treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)- Dr Rajah does ambulatory sleep studies (polysomnograms)- these studies can sometimes be conducted in the comfort of your home.
